The Algerian Dinar (DZD) is the official currency of Algeria and is issued by the Bank of Algeria. It was introduced in 1964 after Algeria gained independence from France, replacing the Algerian franc. The Dinar is used for all domestic transactions and is not freely convertible on international markets. Algeria's economy is heavily reliant on hydrocarbon exports, primarily oil and natural gas, which influence the strength of the DZD. Due to strict currency controls, the exchange rate of the Dinar is regulated by the central bank. Inflation and black-market currency trading remain challenges for the Algerian economy.
