The Honduran Lempira (HNL) is the official currency of Honduras, introduced in 1931 to replace the peso. Named after Lempira, a 16th-century indigenous leader, the currency is issued by the Central Bank of Honduras. The lempira is widely used for daily transactions, with denominations available in both banknotes and coins. Honduras has a primarily cash-based economy, though credit cards and electronic payments are growing in popularity. The HNL fluctuates against foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar, which is widely accepted in the country.
