The Cambodian Riel (KHR) is the official currency of Cambodia, introduced in 1955 to replace the Indochinese piastre. While the riel is used for everyday transactions, the US dollar is also widely accepted, particularly for larger purchases. The currency is managed by the National Bank of Cambodia, and it comes in both coins and banknotes of various denominations. Despite efforts to promote the riel, Cambodia remains a highly dollarized economy.
