The Nicaraguan Córdoba (NIO) is the official currency of Nicaragua, introduced in 1912 and named after the Spanish explorer Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. The Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) issues the currency, which is divided into 100 centavos. Modern banknotes depict national heroes, cultural landmarks, and natural reserves. Nicaragua’s economy is agriculture-based, with coffee, beef, and gold exports playing a key role. The córdoba operates under a crawling peg system, meaning its exchange rate is gradually adjusted against the US dollar, ensuring economic stability.
