The Burmese Kyat (MMK) is the official currency of Myanmar (Burma), issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar. The kyat, divided into 100 pyas, has a complex history with multiple versions issued over the years. Myanmar’s economy, heavily dependent on agriculture, natural gas, and jade exports, has seen the kyat fluctuate due to political instability and international sanctions. Informal currency markets often dictate exchange rates, making the kyat’s value volatile. Despite economic challenges, Myanmar continues efforts to stabilize its financial system.
